An Interactive Flashcard Platform
Over the past few months, I’ve been working on a side project called Flearn, a platform designed to make studying more interactive and trackable. It started out as a small experiment to build a solution to get my daughter who is 9 to do more studying, but is gradually grown into something much more structured and capable.
Why I Started It
I’ve always liked using flashcards for quick recall and spaced repetition, so I thought if I can mix the usage of technology in a simple way with traditional flashcards it may get the attention of my daughter and have her try studying with a more positive attitude. I decided to therefore build something myself, something simple, responsive, and distraction-free, but with a bit more intelligence behind it.
What Flearn Does
Flearn uses interactive flashcards that can flip, test, and track progress over time. The idea is to make studying feel less like repetition and more like an engaging activity. The design is intentionally minimal and works smoothly across devices from a desktop screen to a phone.
The platform currently supports three main modes of use:
- Public Access: Anyone can browse and study from an open library of flashcards and study boards. Everything here is free to access, no sign-up required.
- Registered Users (Beta): For now, registered users can create up to five custom study boards (100 cards each), and access detailed performance analytics like daily activity and per-board stats. I’m offering a 180-day beta period with full access while I refine the features and gather feedback.
- Teacher Tools: Educators will be able to create subject-specific boards and share them securely with students via unique URLs. Password-protected access helps keep classroom materials private. I will also be connecting analytics into this, so teachers can track performance over time.
Current Status and Next Steps
The core of the app is up and running, and I’m focusing next on improving the registered users experience, hence the 180 day beta access that I’m building out. I have created a collection of free study cards related to different subjects and studying levels, such as study cards for Comptia certifications, study cards for keystage 2 subjects, and some basic language study cards.
I will grow the library of free study cards over time, but this will take me some time to achieve.
What’s Ahead
Flearn is still very much a work in progress, but it’s been a rewarding project to build combining front-end UI work, database design, and user experience thinking in one place. I’ll be posting occasional updates here as I add new features, improve performance, and (hopefully) move it toward a increased public awareness.
